The Traceys of Fermanagh can trace their history back to the beginning of historical records, as Fermanagh formed part of the territory of the Cenél Eóghain.
|
O’Tracy of
Fermanagh The following is the location of the clann based on the map
‘Topographical and Historical Map of Ancient Ireland’ by Philip Mac Derrmott
in 1846. The
historian Peadar Livingstone, expresses an opinion that the Traceys may not
be natives of Ulster. He states “Similarly, is the Uí Neill origin adopted by
the Farrys, the Fees, the Treacys and the Corrigans genuine? They could
easily have been planted in Fermanagh during the Sileach supremacy,
1000-1200, or they could easily have been attracted towards giving themselves
a Cinéal Eoghain progenitor.” It may be that these Traceys were of the Uí Bairrche and
may have settled in Ulster in the 10th or 11th century,
at the time of the adoption of surnames by the Irish. The Fir Monach locha
Éirne (Mooney of Loch Erne) whose name later became the name of the county of
Fermanagh, were an Uí Barriche tribe of Leinster brought there by St. Tigernach, Bishop of Cluain Eui (Clones, Co.
Fermanagh/Monaghan) (†544-550AD AU) an Uí Bairrche saint. Muinntear Treasaigh
were herenachs of his church in Fermanagh. Also referenced are Muinntear
Ghormain, both family names were kings of Uí Bairrche.
In addition, there are Tracey and Gorman families in Clones, with Gorman
placenames. There are the townlands of Drumbargy and Meenawargy in the civil
parish of Cleenish and Tullymargy in Devenish. |
Mac Gabhráin [circa
1700s] finishes his description of the termoner lands and families by writing:
'That is the number of
termoners who are in Fermanagh at the time of the family of Donn Mór son of
Raghnall' [Mag Uidhir].
Ó Treasaigh (Treacy):
Cill Tighearnach (Kiltierney, near Ederney).
Ó Gormáin (Gorman,
O'Gorman): Teampall Ghuirmin (Templegurmeen [Temple Gorman?], belonged to vicarage of Cill Nadhaile [Kinawley]). Caladhchoill (Callowhill).
Termoners: This is the only
word used in the text to designate the lay hereditary farmers of church lands.
Primarily and strictly the ttermoner, farmed termon lands (tearmann, from Lat.
terminus, limit, sanctuary, protection), that is lands not only farmed for the
benefit of the church, but also having the privilege of sanctuary.

Muinntear
Treasaigh, O Tracy, termoners of Cill Tighearnach, which see. Munter Slevine (O
sleibhne) were herenaghs of Magheri Kilterny in 1609 (Inquis.) they were a
family of poets appearing as such in Fm. under the years 1022, 1031, 1168.
[where they are described as chief poets of the north of Ireland]
Muinntear
Ghormain, O Gorman (Mac Gorman being more a Leinster and Munster name),
termoner of Teampull Ghuirmin and of Caladhchoill which belonged to the
vicarage of Cill Nadhaile (Kinawley).

Church Families
To look after this land the church founders selected a family as
tenants. The head of this family was called a ‘herenach’ or a ‘termoner’…was
hereditary.

10th March 1826 Spring Assizes Enniskillen
A charge was brought
against John Maguire for tendering an illegal oath to Dominick Noone...Bernard
Tracey a farmer from Derrygonnelly, also gave evidence against Noone. He said
that Noone had been in his service for two months and was not worthy to be
believed on his oath in a court of justice. He had found him guilty of
stealing oats and so had turned him out but had first given him a good
character reference.

On Friday last, as Mr. Bernard Tracy, publican, of Derrygonnelly, was in the act of cleaning a fowling piece, he put the muzle to his mouth, and the breech to a live coal, when the powder, the only charge it contained exploded and almost ended his existance. He still lives, and it is to be hoped that he will finally recover from the injury and fright which his foolish action exposed him to. - Fermanagh paper

Fermanagh
Dropping Off.— Two of the oldest
inhabitants of our good town have dropped into the ground, like ripe fruit, of
late. Persons acquainted with Enniskillen for any length of time will remember
the well-known forms of Billy Shaughnessy and Jemmy Tracy, two denizens of Queen street. They had both been in
the army in. th6ir young days; and when pensioned off they liked to be within
sound of the “fife and drum,” and having settled in Queen street, contiguous
to the barrack-gate, they managed to keep their places like permanent
fixtures. Neighbors moved and removed; but amid all the changes of the
changing world around they remained faithful to their first love to the last;
supplementing their small pensions with the proceeds of their industry in a
small way, which generally kept them stirring about. Shaughnessy, two days
before his death, plied his usual trade, with his basket on his arm, although
greatly stooped; and seemed to be as well in health, and as unchanged in
appearance as at any time in our recollection. He had been a driver in the
Artillery, and left the service in 1819, so that for half a a century he was
drawing his pension for service rendered during the stirring times of Napoleon
I. Tracy was tall and erect, and like his neighbor had served in the days of
the First Napoleon, and was one of the few who in these piping days of peace
could speak of Waterloo and its experiences. The two old veterans lived within
a door or two of one another; in death there was but a fortnight between
them—Shaughnessy being buried on the 21st ult., at the age of 82, and the
other on last Monday, aged 80. A funeral party of the 44th, with fifes and
drums, accompanied the latter to his long home. They both sleep in the one
grave-yard; and, like many who have gone before, they will soon be forgotten.
“When we ’Ve dropped like leaves
from the trees,
When we are wrapped in the sod;
Still will the world be as busy as
now—
All will forget us but God.”

25 Oct 1920 Capture of Tempo Police
Barracks by Fermanagh Brigade
...The
arms &c. captured included:-
8
Lee Enfield Rifles.
3
Police Carbines - two without bolts which could not be found in the barrack).
3
Revolvers (all that could be found).
Two
boxes of .303 ammunition and one box of revolver ammunition. One box of Veney
Lights. Some small hand grenades. Handcuffs. Belts and a miscellaneous assortment
of ammunition. Police day books and other documents.
The
arms and ammunition were placed in a white Hupmobile car driven by Patrick Tracey of Clones [Monaghan
born Cavan] (which was not of course intended to be used - the other car had
failed) and the stuff was driven off following the route Tempo - Trasna -
Gardiners Cross by Aughaneagh Church to Nutfield Cross and on back to
Carntrane behind Comdt. Reilly's residence where it was dumped on the mountain
on the land of James Fee. In the car were Comdts. Reilly and Smyth, Joe.
Stavin (wounded in the hand at the entry to the barracks) and Michael Smyth
Drumbrocas. Joseph Stavin was left at Fee's house for the night. The stuff was
removed inside 48 hours to a Monaghan Battalion dump at Crossnagowan, and
ultimately taken over by the Monaghan area. The stuff was lent by Comdt.
Carney to Comdt. Matt Fitzpatrick but in spite of repeated efforts no portion
of it was ever got back to the Fermanagh Brigade. Slavin the only casualty on
our side apart from Comdt. Breen was taken from Fee's house on the following
night across Lough Erne and safely attended to by a doctor in the
Maguiresbridge Company area. Fee's house and land was raided by tans a few
days later, and a servant boy named Burns (who was not a volunteer) was shot
in the thigh.

1950-1969 Local Stories 1950 Cashel and Ederney draw. Ederney
travelled to Cashel on Sunday last to fulfil their Junior League fixture. This
was Ederney’s first appearance in Fermanagh fixtures from 1947. Considering
that this is practically a new look team Ederney gave a grand display to
hold Cashel to a draw. The final score was Cashel 3-3, Ederney 2-6. The
scorers for Cashel were Tracey, Leonard, Gallagher and Mc Laughlin and for
Ederney, Monaghan, Mc Hugh, Murphy, Maguire and Lunny. 1951 Wedding bells for Tracey and Kelly
at the Cathedral, Sligo. Miss Agnes Tracey, “Woodvale,” Kilcoo, Garrison to
Gerald Kelly, Kiltimagh, County Mayo. Mr. Joseph Mc Grath, Rogagh has
died at a comparatively early age. The following marriages have taken place;
Patrick Mc Manus Molleybreen, Belleek to Miss Kathleen Mc Manus,
Moonendoogue, Garrison. Mr. Bernard Keown, Devenish and Miss Kathleen
Feehily, Glen West. In Ballyshannon, Mr. Patrick J. Treacy, Knockaraven to
Miss Sheila A. Mc Cauley, Newtown House, Lisahully. 1953 Cashelnadrea V Cavanacross played
in a gale force wind ended with a win for the Cavanacross visitors by 1-2 to
1-1. Packy and Richard Tracey scored a goal and a point respectively for
Cashelnadrea. Mary O’Reilly, a tinker was
sentenced to two months in prison for stealing money on two occasions from
Mrs Ellen Treacy, Fossagh. She had arrived pedalling her wares and snatched
the money from the table. She was caught on the second occasion. The
sentence will not take effect if she leaves Northern Ireland immediately.
Aged 17, she was married since she was 15. First in the Cashelnadrea district
to have turf saved is Mr. Thos. Treacy, Woodvale House, Kilcoo. John Tracy, Corramore, Garrison,
Co., Fermanagh was fined £5 with £5-18-1 costs and expenses at Belleek Court
for falsely claiming a grant of £1-4-6 towards the cost of fertilizers
purchased from Belleek Cooperative Agricultural and Dairy Society. 1954 In the Junior League Derrygonnelly
defeated Devenish by 3-3 to 1-2. Devenish had a grand full back in J.
Mulrone, who gave a sound display while others to impress were P. Keown, R,
Mc Dermott and J. Treacy. Enniskillen Gaels complete the double
of Minor League and Championship by beating gallant Devenish by 2-4 to 1-2
in the League final. There was a starring performance by J. J. Tracy, Newry
College. 1955 Death of Devenish man. Mr. Patrick
Treacy, Aughmuldoney at the age of 93. He was a successful farmer, fervent
Catholic and sterling Nationalist. All the early season matches have
been wiped out by the frost and snow which has made the grounds unplayable.
Team secretaries for the year are , Mr. F. Murphy, New Street, Ederney, Mr.
P. J. O’Shea, Tawnynoran, Belleek. Cashel, Richard Tracey, Cashel. Mr Seamus
Heron, Brollagh, Belleek for Garrison. Belcoo and Devenish drew in the
Junior Championship with Garrison scoring three goals in the last ten
minutes. Devenish fielded six of their minor team. Best for them were Casey,
Tracey, Mulrone and Mc Gowan. 1956 Richard Treacy, Scribbagh, Garrison
was fined £2 for driving a lorry at a dangerous speed when he was involved
in an accident with a parked lorry on the outskirts of Garrison village. The
other lorry was owned by John F. Acheson. Devenish Minors capture title in a
game which featured an unbelieveable transformation. With 8 minutes to go
Kinawley were leading and had been easily on top for most of the game before
Garrison scored four goals in the final quarter to win by 5-3 to 3-3. J. J.
Carty and P. T. Treacy were prominent throughout as was Benny Carty and
Ferguson but the chief architect was Pat Casey who raced up and down the
line making changes and encouraging his proteges. Roslea defeat Devenish by 1-3 to
0-3 to reach the Fermanagh Senior Championship Final. In a remarkable game
Roslea were totally dominant for 50 minutes yet only led by 1-3 to 0-1. M.
J. Mc Glone starred for Devenish at full back taking about 40 kickouts over
the hour from Roslea misses. Roslea were missing eight of their selection
through illness. Garrison were without their usual full back and their
college star P.T. Treacy and had enough chances to win but fluffed close in
chances including a forward who dropped the ball with a gaping goal in the
closing minutes. 1957 Fermanagh player P.T. Tracey scores
0-4 as St. Colman’s, Newry win the Mc Rory Cup for the third time. Other
scorers were D. Mc Carten 0-3 and K. Mussen 0-1. P. T. Treacy, the Devenish and St.
Coleman’s College player got a wonderful press for his part in his college’s
win in the Mc Crory Cup Final in Lurgan. He was described as the outstanding
player on the field. Peter Cox gave a display of high
fielding and long kicking as Belleek defeat Devenish in the Fermanagh League
in a scoring spree at Magheramena Park by 4-11 to 2-8. Young Tom Daly at
centre full is the coming county full back as his long ground kicking has
about it the hallmark of greatness. The half back line of O’Shea, Slevin and
Bogle covered themselves with glory and Sean Gonigle played county star J.
J. Treacy completely out of the game. 1958 Thirty schoolboys from Devenish and
Kinawley arrived on All Saint’s Day to Belcoo in order to play the Fermanagh
Schoolboy Championship Final on a day of driving wind and rain – only to
find that there were no goalposts. So they promptly moved over to Blacklion,
County Cavan to play the game which Kinawley won by 5g-4p to 2g-0p. With the
wind and rain Kinawley led by six points at half time. Michael Tracy and J.
J. Cleary goaled for Devenish and a feature of the play was the remarkable
defence of Sean Mc Manus, Kinawley’s full back. The secretary and trainer of
the Garrison team who was apparently their only supporter was forced to take
up the line flag. He made a wrong decision and corrected it but was
threatened by a section of the Kinawley crowd and while one held him another
struck him from behind. J. J. Cleary, M. Treacy, Shea, Ferguson and Feely
were best for Garrison while Sean Mc Manus, Tony Cullen, Brian Darcy, Des
Corrigan, Gillece, Smith and Mc Hugh were best for Kinawley. 1959 St. Mary’s Hall, Garrison was
packed on Sunday night for a production of “Give him a house” by George
Shiels. “Garrison has for many years held an enviable reputation for
excellent drama talent and certainly Sunday night’s performance was one of
the best I witnessed since I attended my first concert in Garrison 38 years
ago.” Among those taking part were Din Timoney, Eileen Dolan, Gerard Carty,
Miss Anna Casey, Susan Neilan, Josie Huey, Marie Timoney, Miss M. Tracey, J.
J. Mc Dermott, Jim Carty, T. Grey, Francis Carty, and Phil Flanagan. Fermanagh’s team to play London
hoping to win their first All-Ireland. The team; John O’Neill, Owen
Callaghan, Fr. J. Mc Quillan, Jim Collins, J. J. Treacy, Jim Cassidy, Liam
Mc Mahon, Mick Brewster, John Maguire, Des O’Rourke, P.T. Tracey, Kevin
Screenan, Frank Mc Gurn, Owen Clerkin, Danno Devanny. 1960 In the Fermanagh Senior Football
Championship Devenish-Mulleek defeated Aghadrumsee in Irvinestown by 3-7 to
1-3. Best for the winners were the Treacy brothers, Hernan, Mc Glone, and
the Tinney brothers. 1961

Mr. Patrick Treacy, was fined £2 also. Death has occurred on Thursday last
of Mr. Thomas Treacy, Mugglinagrew, Garrison at an advanced age. The funeral
took place at St. Mary’s church Garrison. A pretty wedding was solemnised at
St. Mary’s church, Garrison on Wednesday last. Mr. Micheal McHugh,

Treacy, at the advanced age of 92 years. Mrs Treacy was from Aughamuldoney,
Garrison. 1968 The wedding took place of Michael
Gonigle, Commons, Belleek, and Agnes Treacy, Corramore, Garrison in St.
Mary’s Church, Garrison. Eugene Treacy and Vincent Flaherty
played in Coalisland in the St. Michael’s v St. Colman’s. Unfortunately
their team lost. The final score was St. Colman’s 6-4, St. Michael’s 1-3. Richard Treacy of the Garrison firm
of contractors has been elected to the committee of Fermanagh Junior Chamber
of Commerce. Treacy Brothers have purchased a
bus to convey their workers from Garrison and Belcoo to work in Enniskillen
and their other building schemes in Fermanagh. 1969 There was a dance in McGovern’s
Hall, Garrison, to make a presentation to Hugh Treacy Derrygonnelly, to mark
the occasion of his retirement, from the forestry at Lough Navar. Http://www.storyfinders.co.uk/directory/ |

McNulty 1851 Arderth Fermanagh (LDS)
Isabel TRACY born 1819 married Hugh McNulty of County Donegal in 1851. In her
1906 obituary published in an American newspaper it was reported that Isabel
was married in the town of her birth - Arderth (sic), County Fermanagh. The
information for the obituary was provided by her illiterate son-in-law who was
also from County Fermanagh. Have searched church records of western Fermanagh
looking for a record of this marriage without success. Could Arderth be a
mis-spelling of an official name like Ardgart or Ardess? Or is it a colloquial
name that is unrecorded? Suggestions? Tom McCarthy

John Tracey & Sarah Duffy
My ggmother Sarah Tracey (Duffy) family is from fermanagh according to English census. Her father was Daniel Duffy and her mother Rose Anne Roddy or Ruddy. She married John Tracey in Durham England in 1876. I believe John Tracey may have also been from Fermanagh. His father was Lawrence Tracey, a mason. There is also some indication the Duffys may have been from Inishmacsaint in County Donegal? Anyone searching the Duffys or Traceys? Thanks.

6. Kitty TRACEY b: in Ireland
Patrick and Catherine emigrated to Quebec, Canada following their son James. The birth order of their daughters is uncertain but Jane, Anne, and Kitty moved to the USA. Biddie has descendants in Onsley (?) Quebec. Mary Stuart had no descendants. Patrick and Catherine appear on the 1851 Canada Census, Quebec, Ottawa County, Clarendon Twp with their son James and daughters Mary and Ann. Patrick is shown on the Agricultural Census with 20 acres under cultivation, 8 acres under crops, and 12 acres of pasture. He also has 30 acres of woods and wild land. He has two oxen and the property is listed as being "midlin" good but not well watered. Patrick does not appear on the Census Records for 1861 so must have died before that date. Catherine is widowed on the 1861 Census, aged 60. She is 69(?) on 1871 Census and not on the 1881 Census therefore she died between 1871 and 1881. On the 1861 Census her religion has been changed from Roman Catholic to Church of England. On the 1871 Census she is shown as Roman Catholic.
