John S. Tracey, at 72; leader of Irish-Americans

By Susan Edelman Record Staff Writer

John S. Tracey, a longtime leader in the regional Irish-American community, died Sunday of heart and kidney failure. He was 72. A retired trucking company manager and Demarest resident for 36 years, Tracey was a councilman and Planning Board member in the late 1950s, and founded the town's volunteer ambulance corps. Described as gregarious, jovial, and helpful to those in need, Tracey was elected grand marshal of St. Patrick's Day parades in Bergenfield and Rockland County, N.Y. He was active in many Irish-American political and cultural groups, helped raise money for the Irish Republican movement, and organized numerous rallies and demonstrations against British involvement in Northern Ireland.

In a "Reverse Boston Tea Party" in 1981, Tracey joined a group of protesters who marched across the George Washington Bridge and sent tea bags skyward attached to green helium-filled balloons. Also that year, wearing a bright green cap in chilling winds, Tracey demonstrated outside Brendan Bryne Arena to protest a concert by British Army bands.

"He was one of those Irishmen born in the United States that be came more Irish than the Irish-born," said John F. Curran, a former Bergen County freeholder who in 1983 accompanied Tracey and U.S. Rep. Robert Torricelli, D-Englewood, on a trip to Ireland to investigate alleged human-rights violations. Tracey was past president of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians of New Jersey, a fraternal society, and a national chairman of the group's Boycott British Goods Committee. He was past president of the New Jersey Gaelic League, a cultural group, and a drummer in several bagpipe bands. He also was active in the An Cumann Cabhrach of Bergen County, which supports families of political prisoners in Ireland.

In 1984, after the Irish Republican Army took credit for the bombing attack on an English hotel where British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was staying, Tracey was quoted in The Record as calling the bombing "a great thing." But his wife of 41 years, Susan, who has many relatives living in Ireland, described Tracey as a gentle man who believed deeply injustice and "sympathized with all persecuted people."

His mother of German descent and his father of Irish ancestry, Tracey was born in Ulster County, N.Y. Both parents died before tie entered grammar school, and Tracey was raised in a Catholic-orphanage,

"You wouldn't think anybody with that kind of start could be that much of a people person," said his son, Patrick C. Tracey' of Dumont. "His thing was to help other people. He was a doer." Patrick Tracey, Dumont's .Volunteer recycling coordinator, recalled his father taking him as a youngster to view building developments. "He wasn't going to yote on something without knowing what was going on," he said. "He voted his conscience ind put the people of Demarest above his Republican party," said Joseph Ringelstein, a former Demurest mayor and 30-year neighbor of Tracey's. "We've lost a gcd friend." Tracey is also survived by his daughter, Jean McBee of Spring Valley, N.Y., and eight godchildren.

Visiting will be at Quirk Funeral Home in Tenafly today from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A formal Mass will be held 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's R. C. Church in Demarest, with burial following at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Tenalsy.

Obituary For John S. Tracey

Demarest, NJ. Born 1918, Saugerties, NY; died October 21, 1990

A bitter loss came to his family and friends with the death of John Tracey, a legendary figure to every Irish American in northern New Jersey. John's death occurred on October 21, after a protracted illness.

John Tracey was a man of unique ingenuity and enthusiasm. With his perfectly matched wife, Susan, he devoted boundless energy and talent to the Irish cause. Whether he was in Killarney outwitting the Dublin government's political police and a hotel manager, or renting a plane to carry alighted sign over a NJ Meadowlands crowd, or merely talking with a handful of chance acquaintances, John always brought the plight of the Irish in British-occupied Ireland to public attention-good-naturedly, ingeniously, and effectively.

The list of associations and organizations to which John belonged and was active in is impressively long. Even more impressive is the simple fact that John never entered or stayed in an organization in which he couldn't be a true worker for the organization's aims.

He led some parades, he marched in the rear ranks in others, he gave uncounted hours to charities and welfare. And always a favored place in his hear went to the land of his ancestors. To his wife and their children and other family go the respect and sympathy of all of us who knew him.

Is duitse, A Ri na n-aingeal, a anam usual. Lig do a scith a dheanamh i mease laochra eile na nGael.

son William E. TRACEY b@1863 md 1st Katherine Hurley 2nd Catherine Marie Carr 9/1/1912.

William E. was Fire Chief in Saugerties, NY

Katherine HURLEY had siblings Mary (md James HUGHES), John(d.7/19/1949 )and Margaret( md. a Mr. Barry d. 4/23/47 San Fran., CA).

William E. TRACEY and Katherine had 9 children so I know there has got to be other descendants out there beside my brother, Dad's cousin Evelyn TEETSEL LEGG and me.

My father John B. Tracey was the son of John Joseph Tracey a rural route mailman who died from the Spanish Influenza on 11/10/1918.He lost his mother Margaret Annette CHRISTILL to TB 4/23/1928.Both are buried at St. Mary's Church in Saugerties, NY

Catherine CARR was the daughter of Edwin and Catherine WELCH CARR. She and William E. had no children together but she was the only person my father remembered as Grandma Tracey.

Other families my father's aunts and uncles married into were: Overbaugh, Oliver, Koch, Avery, Wynkoop, and Teetsel.
