Hon John Tracy. The career of the Hon. John Tracy, of Appleton, Wisconsin, who started life with no advantages of any kind save those given him by nature and worked his way to a position of esteem and respect among the foremost men of his section, illustrates what can be accomplished by persistency, honest endeavor and a determination to succeed, when backed by a natural ability. Mr. Tracy was born in County Limerick, Ireland, April 18, 1852, a son of Edward and Johanna (Brown) Tracy, natives of the Emerald Isle, where the father died in 1862. The mother brought her children to the United States in 1865, settling in Appleton, Wisconsin, whence her two brothers, Richard and Patrick, had preceded her some twenty years, and she still survives her husband and resides in Appleton. She has been the mother of five children, namely: John; Edward, who died in 1868; Mary, whose death occurred in 1901; Kate, died in 1880; and Nora, who married a Mr. McDermott and lives in Chicago. John Tracy was the eldest child of his parents', and he was given little chance to secure the education which he craved, it being necessary for him to go to work when he was but thirteen years old in the spoke and hub factory at Appleton. He secured what education he could in the night school, after the long, wearisome day in the factory was finished, and continued to attend that institution until he had reached the age of seventeen years, when he devoted all of his attention to his work. He had started to work for Jarrard & Mason, July, 1865, at a salary of forty cents per day, and during the same year J. H. Marston purchased the interest of Jarrard, the firm name becoming Mason & Marston Hub and Spoke Factory. In 1877 Mr. Tracy was given the position of foreman, which his attention to business, hard, persevering labor and general ability.entitled him, and he held that position for about twenty years. He now leases the mill in which he first started to work at forty cents per day, and is at the head of a firm that employs twenty men, uses 1,000,000 feet of logs yearly, and turns out hubs and spokes that are used all over the United States and Canada. On November 18, 1879, Mr. Tracy was married to Miss Maggie Powers, who was born in Massachusetts, daughter of William Powers, and seven children have been born to this union: Edward, who is engaged in business with his father; Margaret, who is deceased; Kitty, at home, a teacher; Emma, who died in 1910; Agnes, also a teacher; Mabel, living at home; and Florence, who is attending school. The older girls were given a high school education, while Agnes is a graduate of Oshkosh normal school and is now teaching at Appleton. The family are attendants of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Mr. Tracy has always been a stanch and active supporter of the principles of the Democratic party, and his services have been recognized by his election to various positions of honor and responsibility. From 1882 until 1890 he served as a member of the City Council of Appleton, and in the latter year was elected to represent his district in the State Legislature, being re-elected in 1902. He has been chairman of the county board for the past sixteen years, and for the past thirty years has served as treasurer for the Fourth district. Mr. Tracy is the owner of a fine farm in Outagamie county, but makes his home in the city. Although he has been successful in his personal ventures, he has never let himself be governed by the wish for self gain or promotion, but has always been one of the leaders in any movement that his judgment told him would further the interests of the community at large.

James Tracey (b. abt 1800 d. Aug. 17, 1875 Clayton County, Iowa) m. Clarissa Champion

James Tracey (deceased), farmer, son of John Tracey, native of Limerick County, Ireland. James was born in Ireland in 1800; he came to America in 1831 and worked in New Jersey, and then came to Detroit, Mich., where he was married to Clarrissa Champion. By this union there were seven children-- Mary Ann, John, Henry, James W., Joseph, Nancy and Lucy Jane; they are all married except Henry, and all live in Iowa except Mary Ann, who lives in Kansas, and John, who lives in California. James located in Clayton County in June, 1847; he took up the farm occupied by James W. and Joseph when he came to the county. There are 325 acres on section 6, which is in a good state of cultivation. He voted the Democratic ticket. He died Aug. 17, 1875, at home. His son, James W., now occupies the house and carries on the farm with his brother. He married Catherine O'Brien, a native of Georgia, and they have two children-- John and Mary. Clarrissa, the widow of James, makes the old homestead her home. Mr. Tracey was one of the first farmers in the county, and was an energetic and pushing man. He died respected by all.

...My 2x gr-grandmother, Catherine HINCHEY from Limerick City, Ireland, arrived Sydney June 26, 1844 as an 'assisted passenger' on the Royal Saxon. In October 1846, she married a convict, James STEWARD (from Bristol, arrived Theresa, 1839), who had received his Certificate of Freedom on 7 Sep 1846. Family lore says that Mary TRACEY and Margaret KENNEDY were friends of 'my' Catherine Hinchey back in Limerick, and that the 3 young women had decided to emigrate to AU together. The only trace I have found of them in AU is that Margaret Kennedy (and Thomas HUGHES) were witnesses to the marriage of Catherine HINCHEY and James STEWARD in Oct. 1846 at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Sydney...

Michael Tracey & Bridget Ryan

I have a history of Micheal Hines, born in the town of Bruff, the parish of St. James, County Limerick Ireland. Micheal Hines married Margaret Tracey, d/o Michael Tracey and Bridget Ryan from Limerick. Bridget Ryan, a squires daughter fell in love with the stable boy, Michael Tracey Her parents forbid her to marry him, Thus the two ran away and immigrated to Canada. They were married and settled in Prince Edward Island where Margaret was born. The family later settled on the Cow Bay Road in Cape Breton along with a number of other Irish families) They had seven children Martin Hines married Mary Ann Walsh. d/o James Walsh and Elizabeth Boland who emigrated from Ireland and came to Newfoundland. James Walsh was the s/o Patrick Walsh who married Mary Ann Devine and came from Ireland and settled in Brigus, Newfoundland. They had six children James, William, David, Nora, Mara and one other daughter.

I have been researching my Downes ancestors in Ballingarry, so far without much success in pinpointing my direct ancestor (Cornelius, father of John, the emigrant) so I have tried to work on some that may be related.
One was a Hanora Downes who married a John Tracy (or Treacy in some records), of Knockfierna, in 1867. In Griffiths and the 1901 census they are listed in Commons townland (which I take it is mainly Knockfierna village). In 1901 there were John, 65, Honora, 55, son John, 27 and other children including Thomas, Mary, Michael, Denis.
I know from checking local maps that Killoughty (or Killatre, I assume) is very close to Knockfierna.
Are you possibly from this Tracy/Treacy family? If so, do you have any knowledge at all of any Downes families of that area?

The demolition of Treacy's Pub began on the 11th December 2006. The pub has been demolished to improve the Hospital Road Junction, Bruff. The picture on the right shows Martin Treacy the last proprietor of the pub. The site is a well known landmark in the town; the side wall of the building had the enormous Sarsfield mural painted on it in 1991.

1959 A GLORY YEAR

Doon won the Limerick County Minor Hurling title in 1959 beating Dromcollogher in a replay after a lapse of thirteen years...

Paddy Treacy farms the home place in Gurtavalla and was goalkeeper on the team. On the night of the replay Doon’s celebrations were cut short when Pakie Treacy, Paddy’s father died suddenly on the Main Street as celebrations were about to conclude. Paddy won Leader Cup and Rice Cup medals with the local CBS. When he won the Leader Cup medal in 1956, his team mates included Bobby McLoughlin, Jamesy Butler, Robbie Walsh, Mixie O’Brien, James Allis, Timmy Martin, Jim O’Donnell, and Timmy Ryan D. Paddy is married to Nora Nugent a native of Bodyke Co. Clare. Paddy has one son Brian who plays with the club’s junior team and is team manager of the U21 team. Paddy has one daughter Orla. Paddy had three brothers Mossy, Christopher and Martin who all immigrated to London and are now dead. He had five sisters Kathleen, who lives in Newbridge, Breda in Clonlara, Sheila, a Mercy Nun in Nenagh, Noreen lives in Mungret and the late Mary who was married to Michael Anderson in Coolbane.

Houndscourt

I am interested in Treacy/Gallagher marriages of two sisters who married two brothers. The Treacys sisters may have come from Coolavehy, Kilflyn parish in Co. Limerick.

It is probable that the mother of the Treacys was a Noonan from Redchair, which I believe is in the parish of Kildorrery, Cork. These two families settled just over the Cork border in Houndscourt, Limerick, which was in the RC parish of Glenroe and Ballyorgan.
Ellen Treacy, born c1795, married Thomas Gallagher, perhaps about 1815. Thomas lived in the townland of Houndscourt, Kilflyn civil parish, Limerick.

(1) their son Michael Gallagher married Catherine Roche of Castleterry, Ballindangan, Cork, in 1849;

(2) Mary or Catherine Gallagher married a Stanton from Old Castletown, Kildorrery, Cork;

(3) Bartholomew Gallagher, who married Catherine O'Carroll of Hospital, Limerick, settled on family land in Houndscourt, Limerick; and

(4) John Gallagher married Ellen Roche of Castleterry, Ballindangan, Cork (my great-grandparents). John and Ellen came to the US and lived on Staten Island for a couple of years and then came to Boston. There might have been other siblings

Johanna Tracy/Treacy, born c1797, married Maurice Gallagher of Kilcruaig, Kilflyn civil parish, Limerick.

Maurice, Johanna, John, Mary Ann (all went to Australia), Bess, Thomas, and Ellen (who stayed in Ireland).

The Gallagher-Treacy families were baptized in the Ballyorgan church. There is a plaque on the wall for Michael Gallagher who gave money for the altar, chancel floor and altar railing in that church.
