John J Tracy was born in May 1868 Kilruane, Cloughjordan Parish, Co. Tipperary, the eldest son of John Tracey & Anne Costello. His father worked as a carpenter on the Beechwood estate. After the death of his mother, his father emigrated to New York in 1879/1880 with his six children.

The Rev. Dr. Tracy has had a remarkable career as an educator. After his graduation from Manhattan College, New York, and from Harvard university, he spent two years in France, where he was professor of English at the College of St. Etienne, Savoy. For 15 years he was principal of the Cathedral high school, Providence, R. I., while Arch bishop Dowling of St. Paul was pastor of the parish. He was also vice president of Manhattan college, New York, and inspector of schools of that district. Feeling himself called to the priesthood, and at the same time wishing to continue his educational work, he applied to Bishop Carroll of Helena, who was at that time just building his college. Having finished his theological studies at St. John's university, Minnesota, and at Mt. St. Charles college, he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Carroll in the college chapel, June 18, 1914. His rise in his chosen work was rapid. In June. 1917, he was appointed vice president of the college and supervisor of teaching and of studies. In 1918, he was appointed diocesan superintendent of schools and was elected president of the Catholic Educational association of the diocese. In May 1919 he was initiated into the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus. In August 1919, he was promoted to the Presidency of Mount St. Charles. In February 1921, he was appointed Superintendent of Schools of the Diocese of Helena.

He died 6 Jun 1923 13 miles SW of Helena Montana in an automobile accident.
